West Quarter of Salamanca

Urban Art, Identity, and Wall-to-Wall

The Barrio del Oeste / West Quarter of Salamanca has become a true benchmark for urban art and contemporary culture in Castile and León. What was a modest neighborhood with a strong local community decades ago now features facades, party walls, garage doors, and urban furniture filled with color, creativity, and message.

Origin and History of West Quarter

West Quarter originated around the old Carmelite convent, with the first buildings being low-rise, and developed more intensely from the 1960s onward.

In the 70s, neighborhood initiatives began, such as the Sunday flea market (‘el Rastro‘), which brought life to the neighborhood and reinforced its identity as a committed and active community.

The Urban Gallery: Outdoor Art All Year Round

One of the most visible signs of the west of Salamanca is its Urban Gallery, a project that literally paints every corner of the neighborhood:

  • Garage doors, garbage bins, party walls, urban furniture… All function as canvases. Street-level art, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
  • Since the spring of 2013, the ZOES Neighborhood Association, together with the Lemarte Collective, has promoted this initiative, which incorporates new works by local and international artists every year.

Featured Works

Some of the most interesting murals you can see when touring the Barrio del Oeste:

  • “Gepetto” by Milu Correch, a well-known piece that has recently been illuminated so that it can also be admired at night.
  • The new mural by Sfhir (winner of the Best Mural in the World 2023 award according to Street Art Cities) in the Plaza del Oeste. Titled “The Muse of the West” (La Musa del Oeste), it depicts a woman with strong musical inspiration. It will be a large-format piece, involving the façade and party walls.
  • Works like “The Animated Fountain” (La Fuente Animada) by Joseba Muruzabal, the giant pencils by Felipe Piñuela on the façade of some buildings in the Plaza del Oeste, or murals such as the “Nest Building” (Edificio Nido) by Pablo S. Herrero.
  • A very recent mural by Elisa Capdevila on Jaime Vera Street, featuring a large mural with a realistic image of a mother with her child.

How to Visit / Practical Tips

Here are some tips to fully enjoy the Barrio del Oeste and its urban gallery:

  • Walk unhurriedly: Wear comfortable shoes and take time to look up; large murals are usually on high facades or party walls that are best discovered when you stop.
  • Better with a map or app: On the official Salamanca Tourism website, you can find information about the Urban Gallery, as well as a mobile application to locate the murals.
  • Participate in events: The Urban Gallery organizes new editions every year, featuring guest artists, workshops, music, etc. If you happen to visit on days when there is programming, the experience is greatly enriched.

The Barrio del Oeste is not just a collection of streets; it is a constantly changing canvas, a living gallery that reflects creativity, rootedness, and urban transformation.

It is proof that art confined to museums is not the only way to express oneself: when the walls speak, they also narrate history, identity, and community.

And if you visit Salamanca, you must take a walk through this neighborhood: you will see that every wall has something to tell.
