Learn culture and popular wisdom through proverbs
April, a thousand waters… and a lot of Spanish!
Have you ever heard a Spaniard say something that sounds like a nursery rhyme but is absolutely right? Welcome to the fascinating world of proverbs!
In our school, we believe that to truly speak Spanish, you don’t just need grammar; you need that popular spark. And since we are in the middle of the month of flowers (and umbrellas), today we are going to discover what popular wisdom says about April.
☔ The classic of classics: “En abril, aguas mil” If you can only learn one proverb this month, let it be this one. It is the king of spring.
What does it mean? That it usually rains a lot in April. But be careful, they aren’t terrible storms, but rather those constant rains that prepare the fields for summer. Extra fact: If you want to sound like an expert, add the second part: “…y todas caben en un barril.” It means that, although it rains many times, it’s not always a large amount.
❄️ Don’t put your coat away yet! For those who hate the cold: “Abril, abrilero, siempre es traicionero”
Did the sun come out and you put on a short-sleeved t-shirt? Mistake! April tricks you. One moment it’s hot and the next the temperature drops ten degrees. This proverb reminds us that we shouldn’t be overconfident.
🥖 Bread and wine: the Spanish obsession Many April proverbs focus on agriculture because the food for the whole year depends on what happens this month.
“Abril frío, mucho pan y poco vino.” It seems that cereals love the April chill, but grapes not so much. So, if you’re cold this month, at least you’ll have plenty of bread for sandwiches. “Marzo ventoso y abril lluvioso sacan a mayo florido y hermoso.” The perfect combination for nature to look spectacular.
🧐 Why learn proverbs in your Spanish classes? Learning proverbs isn’t just linguistic “posturing.” It’s an incredible tool for three reasons:
- Memorization: The rhymes make the words stick in your brain.
- Culture: You will understand the agricultural past and Spain’s connection with the climate.
- Connection: Nothing makes a native speaker smile more than seeing a student use a proverb at the right moment. Try it at the bar and you’ll see!
