☀️The Perfect Opportunity to Learn Spanish
If you are already in Salamanca or are planning to visit us soon to improve your language level, there is something fundamental you must understand: in Spain, popular wisdom is law. The month of May is not just the prelude to summer; it is a time loaded with traditions, curious weather changes, and a special energy that floods the streets of our golden city.
Learning Spanish is not limited to memorizing lists of verbs in the classroom. At DICE Salamanca, we believe that true fluency comes when you understand the soul of the culture. That’s why today we explore the secrets of this month through our proverbs.
📚 The May Proverbial: Wisdom You Should Know
Spanish culture is passed down from generation to generation through proverbs (refranes). If you want to speak like a true native, take note of these three that set the rhythm of May:
1. “Until the fortieth of May, do not take off your tunic” ✨ This is, without a doubt, the most famous proverb in all of Spain.
- What does it mean? It warns us that the cold can return at any moment until June 9th (the “40th of May” in our traditional count 😂).
- DICE’s advice: Even if you see clear skies over the Plaza Mayor, don’t trust it! Always keep a “rebequita” (a thin cardigan) handy in case the Castilian wind decides to greet you in the afternoon.
2. “The fish of May, to whoever asks for it, give it away” 🐟 In the old days, it was said that in this month fish did not have its best flavor or quality.
- The cultural lesson: Generosity is key. But if you ask us, instead of fish, we recommend sharing a good portion of Guijuelo ham while you practice Spanish with your classmates on one of the city’s terraces.
3. “A hot and rainy May offers copious goods” 🌧️ If a sudden downpour falls while it’s hot, don’t complain!
- Why is it good news? It is the sign that the campo charro (Salamanca countryside) will be beautiful and the harvests will be abundant. For you, as a student, it means that the natural landscapes surrounding Salamanca will be at their peak splendor for your weekend excursions.
🏛️ Why choose Salamanca to study Spanish this summer?
Salamanca is known worldwide as the “City of Spanish.” It is not only because of its prestigious University (one of the oldest in Europe), but because here, one of the purest and clearest accents in Spain is spoken. Living the experience in Salamanca during the summer months allows you to:
- Total Immersion: Practice the language 24/7, from the moment you order a coffee until you go out partying at night.
- University Atmosphere: Meet students from all corners of the world.
- Living Heritage: Study surrounded by monuments declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
